From a humble origin in 1960,the institution has grown into one of the top technological institutes in India. The education is primarily based on engineering technology. A few research works are also taken up but this field can be considered as the Achilles' heels of IIT. In totality, research works constitute not even 1% of the total tutorials undertaken in these institutions. Nevertheless, the institution has been largely successful in creating a niche for itself.

The mound of Jajmau that is also called Jajmau is one of the most important and the most visited tourist destination in Kanpur. In fact, the mound of Jajmau is considered an important excavation sine in not only Uttar Pradesh but also in India. The mound of Jajmau that is located on the eastern end of Kanpur occupies a high place among ancient cities of the region. Excavations of the mound were undertaken during 1957-58 that unearthed antiquities ranging from 700 BC to 1600 AD. These excavations resulted in unearthing various items that throw a light on the life and times of later Vedic period and beyond.

The Kamala Retreat lies in close proximity to the Allen Forest Zoo and is owned by the Singhania family. This is a museum resort with various historical and archaeological artifacts on display. Those interested in visiting the museum may do so with prior permission from the Deputy General Manager, Kamla Tower, Kanpur.

Kamla retreat is one of the happening areas of Kanpur best suited for family gatherings, outdoor activities and picnics.   KANPUR EXCURSIONS

 Bithoor
Bithoor   Bithoor is an important religious and historical town that is situated 22 kilometers from the city of Kanpur. Bithoor that is situated on Kannauj Road is a tranquil spot, suffused with historical and religious significance. Situated on banks of Ganges, Bithoor' s glorious past is wrapped in legends and fables. According to Hindu mythology, Bithoor was chosen by lord Brahma, the Creator, as his abode after the destruction of the Universe. It was also here that the great saint Valmiki meditated and wrote the Ramayana. Also, it was here that the legendary child, Dhruva, meditated and received the blessing of Gods.
 Lucknow
Lucknow   Lucknow, the city of Nawabs, has never ever lost its relevance in the Indian history and culture. The city inspires manner in a way that people who have not experienced in, yearn for it. Lucknow has always ruled as one of the most important centers of Muslim cultural influence in South Asia along with Delhi, Lahore and Hyderabad. Courtly manners, Charbagh, Qauwwali, Chikankari embroidery, Kabobs and the contributions of poets patronized by Lucknow Nawabs are well known all over.

The history of the city is as vivid as itself. It is believed that the city has been named after Lakshman, the younger brother of Lord Rama. The city was earlier called Lakshman Pore that later turned in to Lucknow. The city rose to the prominence during the reigns of Nawabs who built numerous Palaces, Haveli, Mosques and other Monuments. The most illustrious and equally mocked upon Nawab of Lucknow is undoubtedly Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. The city later passed to East India Company after Nawabs lost the battle of Buxar in the year 1764. The city remained the capital of Awadh or Oudh province of the British and went on to become the capital Central Province and in turn Uttar Pradesh.
 Kannauj
Kannauj   Kannauj is a historic town that is situated on the banks of Ganges. The town has remained in prominence for most of the ancient and medieval period. The city rose to prominence during the reign of Harshavardhana who is counted among the most illustrious rulers in India. It was in the mid 7th century that Kannauj was named the capital city of Harshavardhana. The then kingdom of Harshavardhana included the entire region between the rivers Sutlej and Narmada and eastern Bengal.

It again raised to prominence during 9th century when the city became an apple of discord for three kingdoms of the Peninsular India namely Pratihara, Palas and Rashtrakutas. A century long "Tripartite Struggle" followed that resulted in the complete dominion of Palas over the region east of Kannauj. In the 12th century, Kannauj again came in prominence after it was declared the capital of Jaichand. Jaichand was the king who helped Mohammed Ghori in finally vanquishing Pirthviraj Chauhan and Rajput rule from Delhi. The decisive battle was fought in the year 1192 in the wheat-fields of Tarain, in modern Haryana.
 Agra

Never in this world was a city so dependent on a monument to establish its identity. Never was a monument so beautiful as this. Taj Mahal signifies Agra and vice versa. Agra, the imperial capital of erstwhile Mughal Empire, is the city of unspeakable grandeurs.

Taj Mahal is not only the most beautiful monument in Agra but also probably in the whole world. The sheer look on this white beauty provides solace to heart and soul. Taj, the most magnificent symbol of love that a man ever built for a woman, stands almost in the center of the city of Agra. Dominating walls, an intimidating gate, a mosque and a royal inn enclose the structure.

 Benaras
Benaras   Varanasi is solace. Varanasi is peace. Varanasi is serene. Varanasi is everything a troubled heart seeks for and much more. Nobody knows when was this city established, leave alone who established it. Hindus maintain that the city is outside the earth and is situated on the 'Trident' of Lord Shiva. This might feel like a bit to cocky but everybody maintain, including non-Hindus that Banaras is simply out of this world. By the way Varanasi has been named after the two tributaries of Ganges that flows through the city named Varuna and Assi rivers. It was later changed to Benaras and re-christened Varanasi.
 
 

  RELIGIOUS PLACES IN KANPUR

  Jain Kaanch Mandir
Jain Kaanch Mandir   The Jain Glass temple, one of the attractive tourist spots in Kanpur, is a temple dedicated to Jainism. Constructed in the traditional old style of architecture, this temple is completely built in glass, beautifully adorned and decorated with intricate designs in enamel and glass. One can view the mind-blowing spread of ornate mirror work in and around the temple on the walls, floors and ceilings. The stained glass murals and paintings depict the Jain scriptures.
  JK Temple
JK Temple   Built by the J.K. trust, Shri Radhakrishna temple is also locally referred to as the J.K. temple. This Hindu temple has five shrines dedicated each to Lord Radhakrishna, Lord Ardhnareswara, Lord Lakshminarayana, Lord Narmadeshwar and Lord Hanuman.

One can experience the unique blend of modern and ancient architecture in the marble construction of this temple. The architecture reflects styles of the northern and southern temples in India. Devotees throng from all over the country to get a feel of the pious and holy atmosphere of the temple. The Shri Radhakrishna temple is the ideal destination for those seeking solace and peace of mind.
  Bhitargaon Mandir
Bhitargaon Mandir   Bhitargaon Temple, built around the 6th century, falls among the Gupta group of temples and is situated at Bhaitargaon in Kanpur Nagar District of Uttar Pradesh. Built on brick and terracotta, the temple is an astonishing structure of diminishing tiers, raised on a high terrace. The temple has a central offset on three sides and there is an anteroom, which is connected by an oblong passage. The sanctum resembles tri-ratha.

The ceilings of the sanctum and the anteroom represent domical vaults and the entrance steps are covered by wagon-vault. The walls are decorated with large sculptured niches, placed between ornamental pilasters and surmounted by terracotta bands between two prominent cornices. The sculptures on the walls depict various divinities, myths and stories. It is also decorated with figures of animals, birds and beasts.

  Valmiki Ashram
Valmiki Ashram   The history of Valmiki Ashram dates back to the period of the Indian epic Ramayana. To unveil the story behind the importance of this Valmiki Ashram, Sita came to this hillock to stay during her exile after being expelled from the kingdom by Lord Rama. It is this ashram where Sita gave birth to her twin sons Luv and Kush. It is from this ashram that Sita disappeared into the lap of Mother Earth when requested by Rama to come back to the kingdom.

Since the ashram is on a hillock, it offers a beautiful view of the city and the surroundings. For all nature lovers and those interested in learning new facts about Indian Mythology, the Valmiki Ashram is a place to visit!
 Memorial Church Top
Memorial Church   The Kanpur Memorial Church that is named All Soul's Cathedral was actually built in 1875, in honor of the British who lost their lives in the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. The church is now popularly referred as the Kanpur Church. Walter Granville, architect of the east Bengal Railway, designed the Church. The Church has been erected in Lombardy gothic style. Furthermore, it has been handsomely executed in bright red brick, with polychrome dressings. The interior contains monuments to the mutiny, including several memorial tablets. The memoirs related to this church are truly heart wrenching.
